This illustration centers around the threat mining poses to aquatic life in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA). In April 2026, the U.S. Senate voted to overturn a 20-year ban on mining near this area. In response, a Chilean firm proposed an underground mining project near Ely, MN. The project has been challenged by several environmentalist groups over the impacts it could potentially have on the watershed in this area.
